The red rose is often identified as well with love’s pain. In Greek myth, the goddess of love herself, Aphrodite, was said to have created the first red rose. Rushing to comfort her lover, Adonis- who had been gored by a wild boar – she scratched herself on the thorns. Her immortal blood forever stained the roses red.
